Our History

While working at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton, Bonnie noticed that most geriatric patients would report chronic pain, but the hospital did not prioritize pain management. She decided to conduct a research study on the implementation of best practice guidelines in pain management to help patients recover their independence and lessen their suffering.

Implementing this change in practice resulted in lasting change to the hospital culture, so that assessing and managing pain became routine, patients reported less pain and more satisfaction with their care, and they had shorter average lengths of stay in the hospital. Most of the treatment for pain was through active participation in rehabilitation and through provision of appropriate medical equipment for seating, transfers, and mobility. This research study was a component of Bonnie’s thesis-based Master of Science degree from the University of Alberta.

Bonnie has been working as an occupational therapist in hospitals, community rehabilitation, home care, and chronic pain clinics since 1997. Having an entrepreneurial spirit, she began her private practice in 2009. Since then, she has noticed a growing need for occupational therapy services in Edmonton. Bonnie decided to launch Action OT to create a strong team of occupational therapists to provide a coordinated approach in helping clients alleviate their chronic pain.
